Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller has issued a letter to the Catholics of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. In the letter the archbishop forcefully protests the recent federal mandate requiring virtually all private health plans to include coverage for all FDA-approved prescription contraceptives, and female sterilization procedures. The Archbishop read his letter to those attending the 5 30 p.m. Mass at San Fernando Cathedral, Saturday, February 4. The archbishop directed the priests of the archdiocese to read the letter at all Masses the same weekend.
In his letter, the archbishop writes, "The recent disturbing decision in Washington represents a real threat to all Americans' right to religious freedom... We cannot be silent in the face of this unjust edict." The archbishop also urges the faithful to "contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Administration's decision."
